What We Treat at Pinelands Recovery Center
Substance use disorder (SUD) can be very different. Although the effects are often the same – isolation, damaged relationships, financial loss, even death – the symptoms can be very different based on the substance.
Pinelands Recovery, part of the Discovery Addiction Centers family, offers a wide range of treatment options for individuals struggling with different types of substance disorders. In addition to addressing substance use disorders, we specialize in providing treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders.
Our facility offers a peaceful and healing environment, catering to those in need of recovery in the greater New Jersey area. Our comprehensive services include medical detoxification, cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy.
What Is Substance Use Disorder?
Substance use disorder (SUD) is a complex disease that involves the repeated use of drugs despite the problems it causes. Continuing to use cannabis despite being fired for showing up to work high, or continuing to drink despite multiple DUIs, are just a few of the ways SUDs affect people.
This happens because drugs cause physical changes in the brain, affecting a person’s mental health. Drugs work by causing the nervous system to release dopamine, a powerful neurotransmitter used in the body’s reward system. Eventually, this causes the body to believe it needs drugs to function normally, which drives people to continue using drugs despite the problems they cause.
What Are Co-Occurring Disorders?
Co-occurring disorders, sometimes called dual diagnosis, happen when a mental disorder accompanies a substance use disorder. One doesn’t necessarily cause the other. A person can self-medicate for a condition like depression; substance abuse can cause mental disorders in some cases.
Some common mental disorders that accompany addiction include:
Mood Disorders
These disorders affect the mood and include bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.
Anxiety Disorder
Panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder cause people to feel extremely anxious and worried, often without good reason.
Trauma Disorders
Resulting from enduring a traumatic event, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the most well-known trauma disorder.
Personality Disorders
Disorders like borderline personality disorder strongly affect how a person sees themselves, others, and their world.
Co-occurring disorders can be very complex. As isolating as they can feel, they’re also surprisingly common – the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) estimates 21.5 million Americans have this
combination of disorders.
The good news is that co-occurring disorders are treatable. With years of successfully treating addiction and co-occurring disorders, we’ll help you safely explore the roots of your conditions and treat them effectively, helping you live the life you truly deserve.
