Casa Palmera Programs

Drawing on the expertise of our talented team of healthcare professionals, we at Casa Palmera seek to identify and treat the issues that lie beneath the surface. Healing is more than putting a “band-aid” on the physical health concerns. Unless all aspects of the disorder are addressed, history has shown the problem will continue to show up in other forms.

You are a complex human being who deserves to be treated like a whole person. This means we holistically consider your life experiences, past trauma, personality, friends, family, nutrition, fitness level, medical history, spirituality and desires for the future. By looking at each of these facets, not just the medical components, Casa Palmera creates a comprehensive and individualized treatment plan for overall recovery that is uniquely yours.

Here’s a quick look at our treatment programs that serve adults age 18 and over.

Clinical Therapies at Casa Palmera

Casa Palmera is a nationally recognized treatment center in Southern California, offering measurement-based clinical therapies for treating substance use disorder (SUD) as well as mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and trauma. We are staffed with a diverse team of psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists working together to help each patient move forward within a caring community. Along with our clinical therapies, we apply a holistic approach in our world-class healing environment.

When you begin treatment at Casa Palmera, an individualized treatment program is designed with your specific recovery needs in mind. With your therapist, you will work through various therapeutic methods to learn coping strategies, process pain and heal from substance use and/or learn to manage a mental health disorder and its symptoms. Your treatment plan will draw from the following measurement-based clinical therapies:

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT): Helps you understand the necessity to live with your negative emotions instead of attempting to push them away.

Attachment Therapy: Healing modalities teaching physical, environmental, emotional, social, spiritual and lifestyle values.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Talk therapy helps you reframe negative thoughts and change how you respond to challenges, particularly if you need to work through trauma.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): A highly effective and measurement-based CBT that helps you transform negative thought patterns into positive behavior changes.

Emotional Freedom Technique: An alternative treatment for physical and emotional distress, often referred to as tapping or psychological acupressure.

Exposure Therapies for Trauma: Strategies to cope with past traumatic memories and experiences.

Interpersonal/Group Therapy: A group approach to the treatment of psychological, behavioral and emotional issues.

Aviation Professionals’ Program at Del Mar

The challenges, stress and daily pressure faced by pilots and flight attendants along with time changes, changes in the body’s biological clock, lack of sleep, mandatory overtime and being away from loved ones can lead to substance use disorders, or make it near impossible to cope with a mental health disorder such as anxiety, depression, PTSD and others.

Our team of dedicated professionals are committed to your treatment and success, and the process of helping you process and move forward to get you back to your career. That’s why we have the Aviation Professionals Program at the Del Mar campus. We want you to return to flying with confidence and serenity to face whatever challenges you may encounter in life.

The HIMS Program at Casa Palmera in Del Mar

The HIMS program (Human Intervention Motivation Study) was established in the 1970s to provide a system whereby affected flight professionals are treated and successfully returned to the cockpit under the FAA Special Issuance Regulations (14 CFR 67.401). Prior to this, self-reporting was not as frequent as professionals feared loss of job. Today, most pilots who receive treatment successfully return to duty.

The HIMS program for pilots includes the involvement of company representatives, pilot peer volunteers, healthcare professionals and FAA medical specialists. The program borrows heavily from treatment principles developed in both clinical and industrial settings and has specific elements that reflect the safety-sensitive airline transportation system.

The HIMS Program includes the following components:

Stars & Stripes Program

Veterans and active-duty servicemembers have sacrificed so much of themselves by pledging to fight for our freedoms. First responders put their lives on the line every day for their communities. And families of all of these heroes try to stay strong, waiting for them to make it back home safely. Sometimes, all the sacrifice can be too much, and you may turn to unhealthy behaviors to cope.

When it’s time to pull yourself out of the darkness and find hope, you need a place that not only supports you, but also values the lifestyle aspects of those who serve their country and communities. The Casa Palmera Stars & Stripes program has measurement-based, trauma-focused and personalized treatment in all levels of care that is led by a staff trained in understanding the culture of the military and first responders.

The Stars & Stripes program is customized to help patients with their individualized needs. You’ll find that our services lend themselves not just to veterans, active-duty and first responders, but also to family members.

We’re honored to help our nation’s heroes and their families rebuild their lives. Our clinical and administrative teams take their responsibilities seriously, as many have either walked in their shoes and have been trained to understand the cultural sensitivities of the military and first responders. At discharge and beyond, we establish care coordination between our facilities and other resources or partnerships within the community, whether that’s with the VA or other organizations.

Family Program

Casa Palmera’s family program introduces the strong belief that the behavior of every member of a family impacts every other member of that family. This is why we offer a family therapy treatment program. The stability of the family is often dependent upon each member fulfilling specific roles.

As part of the family therapy treatment program, a line of communication between the family and primary therapist occurs, who manages the patient’s care, strengthens and enhances the patient’s care.

As treatment progresses, the team can always formulate a more integrative treatment approach that will better target a family’s particular needs. During the family program, the family gets to experience some of the therapeutic modalities that patients experience during their stay at Casa Palmera. This helps family members identify and change their unhealthy ways of relating to the patient. These skills will help the family support the healthy changes the patient has made over treatment.

Information gained through family interactions is a significant factor in the development of a more appropriate discharge and aftercare plan. It provides information to other professionals, whose services may be necessary to sustain ongoing recovery after discharge from the Casa Palmera treatment program.
