Treatment Programs at Cliffside Malibu

Cliffside Malibu provides a safe, secure, luxurious and caring environment. Upon your arrival, you will be welcomed by our supportive, professional staff who will assess your current needs to ensure that you will have individualized treatment that is comfortable and effective.

Because nothing is more important than the rest of your life.

What to Expect from the Program at Cliffside Malibu

After the preliminary detox, you will work with a dedicated psychotherapist who will help you uncover and overcome the root causes of your addiction – the situations or experiences that caused you to use in the first place. At the same time, the rest of our industry-leading staff will help you to heal holistically – on the levels of mind, body and spirit.

You will enjoy nutritious gourmet food, presented in our dining room, take meditative walks in our sprawling properties, and strengthen your body with yoga and/or workouts with our personal trainer. You will heal on many levels with massage therapy and meditation.

Cutting-edge treatments like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and interpersonal neurobiology are also available to those patients who would benefit from them. All of this will occur in a home-away-from-home setting. Additionally, any treatments your psychotherapist believes will be important for your recovery – from hiking to yoga – will be provided for you.

Once you are ready to return home, you will be prepared with a carefully thought-out aftercare plan that you will have collaborated with your therapist on throughout your time in treatment. We want you to succeed and will do everything within our power to help you do so.

Understanding the Stages of Change Model

A pair of researchers, Prochaska and DiClemente, at the University of Rhode Island illustrated how those seeking to recover from addiction go through a series of “stages” that allowed them ultimately to transcend their addictions and maintain sobriety. Their model is aptly called the Stages of Change, a non-12-step program.

The staff of Cliffside Malibu was personally trained by Prochaska on this powerful treatment model. It is the hallmark of our treatment program.

Critical to your success in moving through the Stages of Change is your work with your personal therapist. Unlike at other treatment centers, we provide one therapist with whom you will consistently meet. This person will lead you through the Stages of Change and arrange for you the associated therapies and activities that will best support you in the recovery process.

Your therapist will meet you where you are, gradually encouraging you and helping you as you chart the course of real, long lasting, meaningful change.

The Stages of Change model addresses an issue of fundamental importance to lasting recovery – meeting a person with substance use disorder where he is at that point in time and then moving him through the process of becoming willing, then able to make the changes he seeks. This multi-staged process begins with complete denial or lack of awareness that a problem even exists, to an ultimate transcendence of the problem so that it truly is no longer part of your life.

At Cliffside Malibu, we base our individualized treatment plans on the non-12-step program known as the Stages of Change model. This means that we meet you where you are mentally, physically, and spiritually, helping you to overcome the deep-rooted issues that have caused your addiction to flourish. Utilizing a carefully selected array of therapies and incorporating the Stages of Change model throughout your program means you will have one of the best cutting-edge, evidence-based treatment experiences you can possibly find anywhere in the world.

A Look at Treatment Modalities

EMDR & Somatic Experiencing®

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a recognized form of evidence-based therapy, and Somatic Experiencing is an evidence-supported therapy. Using known, proven practices is part of Cliffside Malibu’s approach to all therapeutic treatments. We combine substantial clinical experience and effective treatments for the best outcome possible for all patients. All treatments are evaluated on a regular basis to continue to maintain these high standards, and as every person has unique needs in therapy, every treatment strategy is constructed to fit that person.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a form of therapy that aims to confront and reconstruct a person’s irrational or negative beliefs. It’s a form of talk therapy, meaning it primarily involves talking through these issues and discussing their solutions. It begins by identifying what negative thoughts a person may have and determining whether they reflect reality or not. If not, there are strategies that can be used to
overcome them.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that combines psychological techniques with mindfulness awareness, to assist those with severe psychological disorders, particularly emotional dysregulation. It is very often used at Cliffside Malibu to assist those with co-occurring disorders (also called dual diagnosis) to regulate the out-of-control feelings that the person previously used drugs and alcohol to control. For addiction recovery, we use DBT to help patients:

Motivational Interviewing

The goal of motivational interviewing is to overcome a patient’s natural tendency to be defensive by re-centering the conversation —and its resolution— on them. At its core, it is a partnership rather than a strict, guided therapy. Through motivational interviewing, the therapist helps the patient embrace their own personal reasons for changing and acknowledge that resistance to change is a normal part of the recovery process.

Family Program at Cliffside Malibu

Our monthly comprehensive family program incorporates not only the individual’s stage of readiness but also the families’ current stage of change. Our program is designed to educate and work with individuals and their families in a group atmosphere supported by addictionologists, doctors, psychiatrists, therapists and certified addiction specialists.

Individuals and family members will have a better understanding of the Stages of Change Model, codependency, family roles, boundaries, psychopharmacology, brain neuroanatomy, depression, anxiety, better communication skills and other related topics. Family members and/or significant others will have the opportunity to explore their own influences on the family dynamic. Additionally, if clinically appropriate, Cliffside offers weekly family therapy.

The thought of attending a meeting with your loved one who is in recovery may bring about mixed feelings. So, to help you understand what to expect, here’s a quick look of what happens at the monthly Cliffside Malibu Family Program:

We look forward to spending time with you and your family so that everyone can understand each other and finally heal together.
